RC Boys Track Recap Auburn Indoor - 2/19/22

Rockford Christian Track & Field Highlights
Auburn JV/V Indoor Invitational

Feb 19, 2022

Rockford Christian boys track and field had a very good day at the Rockford Auburn JV/V Indoor Invitational on Saturday, February 19. The squad of 19 athletes had 29 personal bests and scored in 11 events. The numbers get even better. All in all, there were 6 all-time top-ten program performances. Together the Royal Lions amassed 64 points and placed 3rd in the 18 team field –  made up mostly of 2A and 3A schools.

The following are just of the many stories that give life to the aforementioned stats:

Our 2022 sprint core has talent, but no real experience at the varsity level. Connor Curry and Alex Bugarin are two journeymen seniors who recognize that their time is right now. They consistently pair up against each other in practice when we have block starts and competitive flys. There is good-natured trash talk and ribbing when one gets the better of the other in a rep or workout. Curry and Bugarin are not just great friends and teammates, they are great young men. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching both of them in my honors American Literature classes last year, and as seniors in AP Literature currently. They bring a ridiculous sense of humor and camaraderie to the squad, and they make me laugh out loud at every practice. The seniors have big dreams for our sprint relays. On Saturday, the quartet of Bjorn Calrson, Adam Santana, Curry and Bugarin all ran big PRs in the 4x200m relay. Carlson blistered the track with the 16th fastest split in program history running a 24.0 leadoff. Santana secured the lead with a 25.3 circuit. But, it was Curry’s 24.3 split (#22 program all-time) on the third leg blew the race open and allowed for a perfect exchange to Bugarin on the anchor. Bugarin had a perfectly clean run to split 24.8 and bring the stick home in a total time of 1:38.41. Admittedly it is early in the season, but the time is currently the second fastest in the state for 1A.

We have a tradition where our team captains acknowledge the special achievements of the squad members with a gaudy, fake gold necklace. The chains are distributed in the team huddle at the end of the meet and are required to be worn at school the following day. There are no rules or requirements for what earns these captains’ chains. Junior sprinter Sam Erdman had two impressive personal bests on Saturday in the 60m and 200m dashes. However, it was Erdman’s enthusiasm and character that got the attention of the team captains at the meet on Saturday. “He was everywhere today cheering on the boys,” stated Adison Elliott. The RCSTF program has a core team belief that anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word lifts a man up. The Royal Lions set 29 personal bests as a squad at the Auburn fieldhouse on Saturday. Sam Erdman ran two of them, but he was responsible for helping 18 of his friends set the other 27. Medals, trophies, and records are nice to win. But, HOW and WHY we live matters more than WHAT we achieve. Thanks for being you, Sam.
